This collaboration with Mechanical Link Therapist, Nancy Crooks is currently up for Materia: investigative collaborations in health/medicine + art at Cabinet Magazine's exhibition space in Brooklyn, NY. For the exhibition, Nancy and I were asked to create a collaborative project which explored ideas of materiality in our respective practices. One commonality we noted early on in our conversation was this problem of visualizing and mapping the invisible. As a mechanical link therapist, Nancy has to navigate her patient's body and manipulate vital structures which rest under many layers of connective tissue while remaining on the surface, without breaking any barriers. How can an arterial structure in the center of the brain be adjusted from the outside? Also, how do we begin to convert a visual schematic into a tactile map? How does map become object?

I am pleased to announce that my piece Anthropocene will be in the Symposium + Art Exhibition at the Center for the Study of the End of Things.

"The Center for the Study for the End of Things, a research institute affiliated with the University of Virginia, is holding its Inaugural Symposium on February 5, 2010. The location is a vacant 10,000 square foot furniture store in Charlottesville, VA. Immediately after the Symposium, the building will be demolished."

Beeswax, cast iron, cuben fiber, embroidery thread dyed with Umbilicaria lichen*, geological map of Zion National Park, UT; IV stand, pine recycled from a geodesic dome built in Grifton, NC; propane tank, recycled wheel-barrow hardware, and ripstop nylon.

*This homemade dye was processed with Umbilicaria Mammulata species lichen collected in the Blue Ridge Mountains and fermented in human urine for 14 weeks.

I walked from my studio with the intention of finding a honeybee. At the corner of Lee and W. Grace, I caught one and held it loosely in my hand. We walked to Locker 50b, we are both alive.

Recently, I acquired a solar panel which at some point in its history was part of the world's largest solar power plant in Carrizo Plains, CA. The plant was originally built by the Atlantic Richfield oil company (ARCO) in 1983 as a response to the energy crisis of the late 1970's. It was later purchased by the Carrizo Solar Corporation in 1990, and dismantled in 1994 as the cost of the operation failed to compete with fossil-fuel based energy production. More on the power plant here .

Using GPS software, I triangulated a point which shared the same latitude as the former power plant and longitude as my studio in Richmond, VA. I traveled to this coordinate to capture one day's worth of sunlight. By chance, the coordinate intersected in a cotton field in Grifton, NC. With the solar panel, I stored the sun's energy in two sculptures that I had submerged in an electrolytic solution. One rusted while the other one didn't.
